Young David knew what was at stake. He heard Goliath and knew what Goliath said was a reproach on the men of Israel (1 Samuel 17:26). The men fled as if the army of Lord depended on them. They feared Goliath because they did not fear the LORD. David knew that it was not the honor of men at stake. Goliath “defied the armies of the living God,” (1 Samuel 17:36) and David knew that God would defend His name, if there were only a servant to clothe Himself in the strength of the Lord, a man with the stones to face Goliath. The Israelites fled because their strength was nothing to Goliath’s. David stood up because the strength of the Lord was greater than Goliath’s; “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this philistine,” (1 Samuel 17:37).
David had the stones (1 Samuel 17:40). More, in fact than were needed, because his faith was great enough to move mountains, to slay giants, to stand for the whole nation in battle. David didn’t ask for permission, David didn’t care about the Philistine’s feelings. David wasn’t PC and didn’t kowtow to the idols of God’s enemies. David stood up, marched out and challenged the enemies of God. David needed five stones, but God only needed one thrown in faith.
The Son of God had stones.
John the Baptizer declared that the mighty man of God is here (Mark 1:7). The greater David feared the Father more than Rome, more than Satan, more than the powerful scribes and priests who sold out to the idol of the Roman Imperial cult (John 19:15). Jesus said to Peter “on this Rock I will build my church,” (Matthew 16:18) and Jesus didn’t ask for permission. He didn’t bow to the self-made God-emperor of Rome. Jesus declared Himself Lord (Mark 1:14-15) and faced the consequences (Mark 15).
When man fell from Eden, the throne room of the true King, God withdrew and cast man out, placing an angel at the door to work it and keep it in man’s place (Genesis 3:24). At Jesus’ birth where is Yahweh’s kingdom? All the nations, at Jesus’ birth, were under the dominion of Satan (Luke 4:5-8). That’s why Satan can offer them to Jesus in the wilderness and it’s a real temptation to Jesus. But Jesus had the stones to stand up and fight, not avoiding the way of suffering; the way of selfless service. Jesus came to take by force through obedience to His Father. He wasn’t going to take the easy road to the throne (Luke 4:8; Phil. 2:5-11).
Jesus said,“But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house” (Mark 3:27). Jesus plunders the Earth, adding to the treasures of Heaven, because He has come into the world to commit a political coup d’etat. He throws down Satan, the strong man, who has enslaved the whole world under sin and death and by destroying the kingdom of darkness, Jesus ushers us all into the kingdom of light.
Jesus had the stones. But he only needed one to defeat Satan and His tyrannical rule. Once it was rolled away from the tomb he left it there and put all His enemies to shame (Col. 2:8-15).
In Christ we are more than conquerors, so why are you being defeated (Romans 8:31-39)? By sin? By the world? Why are you fleeing in fear like Israel before Goliath? Because you are fighting in your own strength? Because you don’t believe Jesus is Lord?
Do you have the stones? Like David, one is all you need, thrown in faith. And that stone is Jesus (Romans 9:33; Peter 2). Jesus is an offense and a source of stumbling for the disobedient. Stop acting like a Sunday school namby-pamby. Jesus is the word of God and that word is to be proclaimed to the whole world (Matthew 28:18-20), no matter who is offended, who threatens you or what you stand to lose.
Stop pandering for middle class respectability and friendship with the world. Stop whoring yourself with the spirit of the age. Have the stones to stand up, march out and declare the truth in word and deed, no matter what you suffer (Hebrews 2:10). Have the Prophets as your role models (James 5:10). Stop kowtowing to the rainbow jihad. Stop hiding your faith in public. Why are you selling out your birthright for earthy comfort like the one whom God hates (Genesis 25:29-34; Romans 9:13)? Confess your love and fear of the world. Die and rise.
What do your wife and children need? What does your church need? Who is defying the armies of the Lord in your community? What sin is got you by the heart and soul? What do you need to do? Are you willing to fight for it? Bleed for it? Die for it?
Is your God bigger than your circumstances? Bigger than the rainbow jihad? The abortion clinic death camps? Your porn addiction? Your fear of man? Is Jesus bigger and stronger than your sin?
Biblical masculinity is Jesus; the collection of all those characteristics which flow from delighting in and sacrificing bodily strength for goodness,” (Future Men, Wilson. 13)
Do you have the stones? One is all you need, thrown in faith and His name is Jesus. Throw it and accept the consequences. That’s biblical manhood.
